The station is located partly west of and partly on the viaduct over the Nieuw-Amsterdamsestraat, on the north side of the track. The former railway crossing has been replaced here by a grade-separated crossing, with the Nieuw-Amsterdamsestraat sunken and partly four-lane (2x2 lanes). A bicycle-pedestrian bridge has been constructed next to the railway viaduct, to the station square on the west side. There is also a large parking lot (P+R) and a bus station. The construction took into account the possibility of a track doubling in the future, with an extra platform on the south side of the track. In addition, a possible expansion of the car park and the bus station has been taken into account. Construction of the station started in March 2010. The original planning was that the station would be opened in December 2010. Because the accessibility of the station was still insufficient at the end of 2010, the commissioning was postponed to April 3, 2011. On the same date, the Emmen Bargeres station was closed. On Friday 27 May 2011, the official festive opening of Emmen Zuid station took place. In September 2011, the station was awarded a Brunel Award, an international prize for railway architecture. The first prize was won in the Rail Stations category.
On 4 July 2018, the Council of State announced that plans to double the track over a length of 600 meters and to build an extra platform will continue. In addition, a 15-minute service during rush hours is possible. The construction of a second platform requires adjustments to the public space around the station. The accessibility of the existing platform will be improved. Bicycle sheds will be moved and an entrance will be built to the second platform. Construction started in the summer of 2020 and was completed on April 13, 2022.[3][4] Due to the construction of an extra passing facility at the station, the time gain on the Emmen-Zwolle route is 4 minutes.
