Está considerada como el monumento histórico más importante de este pueblo y de los alrededores. Es conocida como "La Catedral de la Serranía".

Fue fundada en 1505 y restaurada en el siglo dieciocho cuando toma el aspecto que tiene en la actualidad. En los sótanos del interior tiene un cementerio antiguo, donde cuenta la tradición que tras el enterramiento y después de muchos años los cadáveres han aparecido embalsamados e intactos. De hecho, se conservan dos momias en buen estado en el Panteón o Cripta de la iglesia, que se cree pertenecen a un matrimonio pudiente que aportó buena parte de su capital a la construcción de la iglesia.

La Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua fue construida a principios del s. XVI y reconstruida casi totalmente en el s. XVIII. Vista de lejos impresiona por sus dimensiones y por su robusta arquitectura rosa rodeada del abigarrado blanco y rojo de su característica trama de herencia islámica. No es de extrañar que se la conozca popularmente como la Catedral de la Serranía.

Tiene planta basilical con tres naves, que se cubren con bóvedas de medio cañón y de aristas, separándose las naves por arcos de medio punto sobre pilares. Las calles laterales de la fachada, llevan a dos campanarios octogonales con tejadillos de teja morisca.

En el interior se conserva la pila bautismal en la que fue bautizado Fray Leopoldo, de gran devoción en toda Andalucía, lo que atrae a numerosos grupos de peregrinos a esta parroquia.


It is considered the most important historical monument of this town and its surroundings. It is known as "The Cathedral of the Serranía".

It was founded in 1505 and restored in the eighteenth century when it looks like it does today. In the interior basements there is an old cemetery, where the tradition tells that after the burial and after many years the corpses have appeared embalmed and intact. In fact, two mummies are preserved in good condition in the Pantheon or Crypt of the church, which are believed to belong to a wealthy couple who contributed a good part of their capital to the construction of the church.

The Church of San Antonio de Padua was built at the beginning of the s. XVI and almost completely rebuilt in the s. XVIII. Seen from afar, it impresses with its dimensions and its robust pink architecture surrounded by the variegated white and red of its characteristic pattern of Islamic heritage. It is not surprising that it is popularly known as the Cathedral of the Serranía.

It has a basilica plan with three naves, which are covered with half-barrel and groin vaults, separating the naves by semicircular arches on pillars. The side streets of the façade lead to two octagonal bell towers with Moorish tile roofs.

Inside, the baptismal font in which Fray Leopoldo was baptized, of great devotion throughout Andalusia, is preserved, which attracts numerous groups of pilgrims to this parish.
