Hacia fines del Siglo XIX era prioritario, para la Comunidad de Ushuaia, la construcción de una Iglesia Católica
La iniciativa y tenacidad de los primeros Gobernantes de Tierra del Fuego, junto a los Sacerdotes de la Orden Salesiana de Don Bosco, se hizo realidad.
La construcción se inicio en 1896...
Inaugurada en Diciembre de 1898, abrió sus puertas el Padre Juan Fossatti, siendo la Primera Iglesia Católica.
Se realizaban los eventos mas importantes y los pobladores colaboraban con su funcionamiento y mantenimiento.
El Campanario, de más de 16 mts., se destacaba del resto de las viviendas.
Con el paso de los años y el crecimiento de la población, se hizo necesario hacer un Templo mas grande...
La Histórica Iglesia, ya desactivada como tal, paso a ser Carnicería, luego Almacén y Mercado y mas tarde Deposito...
Sin mantenimiento adecuado, se degrado, desapareció el Campanario...y quedo muy poco de lo que fuera...
Hasta que en 1995 se decide recuperarla. La Nave tiene 7m x 18m aproximadamente, como era originalmente.
Se realiza la reconstrucción de la Torre de 14.50mts y restauración de la fachada.
La edificación está hecha de Madera y Chapa, típica del Extremo Sur Argentino.
La Re-Inauguración, el 15/12/1998 coincidiendo con la Celebración de sus 100 Años!
Con esto, se logra rescatar, una parte Muy Importante de la Historia Local.
Es muy bonita por dentro, sobria, de colores claros, luminosa y con capacidad para 100 personas...
Conocí el interior del Antiguo Templo gracias a la buena predisposición del Párroco Miguel Antonio Echamendi, oriundo de Pamplona.
En la actualidad se abre para Eventos Especiales, a familias de *Antiguos Pobladores*, tales como Enlaces, Comuniones y Bautizos.
Ntra Sra de la Merced es la Patrona de Ushuaia y la Fiesta Patronal se celebra los 24 de Septiembre.
Fue declarada *Monumento Histórico Nacional* el 29 de Enero de 1999.

Our Lady of Mercy is the Patron Saint of Ushuaia and the Patronal Festival is celebrated on September 24.
It was declared a *National Historic Monument* on January 29, 1999.
