Marker Text:
The regions native Ute Indians climbed 'Sun Mountain' for spiritual enlightenment called 'Vision Quest.'

1820: The first explorer to record an ascent was botanist and geologist, Dr. Edward James.

1858: Julia Archibald Holmes was the first woman to document her summit on the Peak. She published her story and became one of the first women named in the history of Colorado.

1887: Cascade & Pikes Peak Toll Road Co. Carved out the first road. Travelers paid $1 to use their own vehicle or $5 to ride the Pikes Peak Carriage Line.

1891: Manitou & Pikes Peak Railway Co. was built and succssfully carried sightseers to the summit in their comfortable rail cars.

1893: English professor Katharine Lee Bates wrote the lyrics to America the Beautiful After her visit to the summit.

1901: A two-cylinder Locomobile Steamer was the first automobile to drive to the top.

1914: Fred Barr built a trail to the top of the Peak for his burro train business. The trail remains popular today.

1915: An auto highway was built over the carriage road.

1916: Race car drivers challenged the mountain in the first Pikes Peak Auto Hill Climb.

1922: A group of five hikers reached the summit to celebrate New Year's Eve with a fireworks display. AdAmAn Club members continue the tradition annually.
