Tous les voyageurs empruntant la Kichi Zibi (rivière des Outaouais) devaient payer une redevance chef Anishinabeg (algonquin) Tessouat. Son peuple et lui contrôlaient le commerce et la circulation sur la rivière a partir de l'ile Morrison, ou il vivait. Orateur talentueux et diplomate, le chef borgne était une figure d'autorité incontestée et un guerrier redoute de ses ennemis.

Visionnaire, il a été a l'origine de la premiere grande alliance entre les Premières Nations et les Européens. Il est resté indépendant et a défendu le mode de vie de son peuple jusqu'à sa mort en 1636.

Everyone who travelled the Kichi Zibi (Ottawa River) had to pay a toll to the Anishinabe (Algonquin)
Chief Tessouat. He and his people controlled the flow of river traffic and trade from where they lived on Morrison Island. A talented orator and diplomat, the one eyed chief was an undisputed leader and warrior feared by his ennemies. A man of vision, he was a party to the first major alliance between First Nations and Europeans. He remained independent and defended his people's way of life until his death in 1636.
