Congregationist formed their first church in Sturbridge in 1736. In 1784 a new church was built in the town center. In 1908, the church was destroyed by fire and a church committee commissioned architect George H. Clemence to design the present building, which was dedicated on May 11, 1910. In 1922, the Baptist, Unitarian, and Congregationalist churches merged at the Congregational Church to form the present Federated Church. In 1954 the building was extended to the east and, in 1960s, a two-story addition to the north and west was added, as well as a new steeple and a portico. (visit link)

The pediment above the portico entrance is supported by four columns and has a circular window in the center. The central entrance is flanked by 4 by 6 pane double hung windows. The second level has three 4 by 4 pane double hung windows.

Rising from the gable roof is a four stage steeple. The lower stage is a square tower. Above is a clock tower with gable roofs over the clocks. The next stage is a octagonal belfry with louvered windows and then a octagonal spire topped with a weather vane.

The 1954 addition to the east covers the east side of the church. The west side has two large frames containing two windows which are separated by spaces. This is followed by a projecting gable end with six windows on the lower level, four windows on he upper level and a round window at the top. At the back is the 1960's addition.
