Bermuda is surrounded by dangerous reefs. It insure safe passage, navigational aids are found around the archipelago. The North Beacon was originally placed in 1912 and replaced in 1960. It is now on display in a a natural setting: on top of a rock outcrop set in a square basin filled with water at the Royal Naval Dockyards.
A sign in front of the beacon is inscribed:
The North Rock is an isolated outcrop marking the outer edge of the reefs
of Bermuda. Since the wreck of the "Bonaventure" in
1593 it has been the graveyard of many ships.
In 1912 a beacon was erected on North Rock as a warning
to navigators and this has been rebuilt on two occasions
in 1960 and 1990.
The lattice tower in the foundation is the 1960 beacon.
“Beacon the raging foam that draws upon the reef.
No man should mock, nor wild and treacherous wave
ignore the mean existence of North Rock.”
