Text on the information panel in front of the church:

"History of the chapel Saarburg-Niederleuken.

The good weather in 1953 and the goal-oriented organization of the main responsible persons had made it possible to celebrate the 1st Holy Mass in this chapel at Christmas after a construction period of about 9 months.

The wish and the need for a new place of worship had been felt by the citizens of Niederleuken since the 1st World War; the driving force at that time was Chaplain Münch. Unsuccessful efforts to find a location, an inflationary phase and the focus on the construction of the war memorial (1932) put this project on hold indefinitely.

Because the old chapel was located at the junction of Saarstraße/Trierer Straße (the "main street") and this important traffic route had been heavily bombed in the last phase of the Second World War, the place of worship was so badly affected that masses had to be held for several months even in the Appel estate, Trierer Straße17. The poor conditions and the fact that the construction of the parish church St. Laurentius in Saarburg had priority, left the conditions unchanged for the time being.

Carried by his experiences on the Balkan front and influenced by his Christian faith, Monsignor Dr. Dr. Nikolaus Appel took the initiative and responsibility to create a new church. He was born in Niederleuken in 1896 and was ordained a priest in 1924. After the war he taught as a senior teacher at a Trier high school. He received support for this idea from the Niederleuken citizen Nikolaus Steinmetz (*1873). He had emigrated as a 14-year-old - following his uncle - to St. Diego/USA and had made a professional career there. He had been in his homeland for the last time in 1951 and is said to have promised his sister Anna on this occasion to participate in the new construction of the Niederleuken chapel. Based on the estimated costs, he donated 2/5 of this amount and thus created the foundation.

In addition to the construction management and the entire coordination, Dr. Dr. Appel contributed the remaining amount and the additional costs himself. Because he won several citizens for further donations and monthly collections were held, the further decoration of the chapel could take place little by little.

It is to the credit of the two sons of this village that this chapel stands here and that neither the community nor the church incurred any expenses. The architect of this chapel was Dr. Vogel.
