Inscription: Indian Princess
of Lake Ronkonkoma, Legend says she claims one male each year by drowning to be with her at the bottom of the lake as she seeks her true love.
What's the Real Story?:
The legend has it that in the 1600's a young Algonquin Indian Princess named Tuskawanta fell in with an English Settler, Hugh Birdsall, and he became enchanted with her. But her father-Chief of the Algonquin Tribe, forbids her from seeing the white English Settler. The distraught princess spends several years writing love letters on pieces of bark and tries to send them to him by floating them across the lake. In despair the princess finally rows out into the lake and kills herself. Since that day the Princess has haunted the lake known as the Lady of the Lake. Angered because she wasn't allowed to love in life, she drowns one man in the lake each year. There have been over 200 drownings since then and only three were women.
