625 N. Benton

1830 - Part of Nathan Boone's survey of the Commons.
1837 - Part of Andrew Wilson's lease of the Commons.

1880 - Census shows Henry Meiser, 8 years old, residing with his father Wiegand Meiser, a carpenter,
   at 630 5 ½ St. (Benton Ave.)
The brick ½ house on the southeast corner of Benton and Decatur.

   builder.

The style of the house is Queen Anne. A distinctive feature of this lovely home is the curved front

supports. A double row of end brick forms the fan heading over the windows and transoms crown
   the double front doors.

History of Mark:
"Built: 1900
Style/Design: Colonial Revival/Cross-gabled
The County’s tax parcels database and the yard plaque give the date of construction as 1900, and this appears to be correct. The address is not listed in the 1891-92 city directory but appears in the 1906 directory. Henry and Lena Meiser were the first homeowners.
Henry likely built the house as he was a carpenter, contractor and builder. After 38 years of ownership, the Meiser family sold the house to Leo L. and Margaret Iffrig, who owned a small market at 816 Adams.

"This 50’x140’ lot has numerous trees in the front yard, making it difficult to see and photograph the house. Much of the yard is planted in ivy ground cover, and a brick sidewalk leads from the street to the gallery, where it then turns right to wrap around the north side of the house. At the rear of the lot is a 1-story, front-gabled, frame 2-car garage that opens onto the alley. The walls are finished with what appears to be Masonite siding and there is a paneled metal overhead door. The garage does not appear to be historic and is noncontributing." ~ St. Charles Historic Survey  Phase IV, PDF pages 554-558
