The three key members of The 13th Floor Elevators were Roky Erickson, Tommy Hall, and Stacy Sutherland. Over the period The Elevators were together, they released four albums and produced seven hit singles. Their most popular song, "You're Gonna Miss Me", and the many other songs they created influenced a long list of other rock bands from the 60s, 70s and 80s. The 13th Floor Elevators were the first band to be described as a psychedelic rock band. Stacy Sutherland died after being shot by his wife during a domestic dispute on August 24, 1978.

On the back side of Sutherland's cubical monolithic memorial headstone made of pink granite is an etched square in which an eye appears suspended over a pyramid. Above this eye is the text: The 13th Floor. Below the pyramid is the text: Elevators. Below this square with the pyramid is an etched rectangle in which is written: Lead Guitar 1965-1970.

Mr. Sutherland is buried in the Center Point Cemetery. Center Point Cemetery's main gate is found where San Antonio Street/CR480 forms a junction with Elm Pass Road in the south end of Center Point, Texas.
