TEXT FROM THE TENNESSEE HISTORICAL MARKER (Marker No. 4D 59)

Doe Creek Cemetery-Ex-Confederate soldiers, James Kennedy and Bill Nails, brutally slain by local Unionists, were the first burials here in 1865 on land donated for the cemetery by Robert Kennedy. Additional Confederate veterans and other members of the community were buried here, including teacher Elmer Duck. Hand-carved stones and unadorned markers make the cemetery a noteworthy nineteenth century rural burying ground.
