This 1940 marker stands by a busy street intersection in downtown Murphy, North Carolina. It is one of several (Q16-Q23) which were placed along highway Rt.64 after a report issued by John R. Swanton of the Smithsonian Institution concluded that De Soto's expedition passed through this area. Since that time there have been different opinions on De Soto's route but Swanton's conclusions still have support. However, in 1989 the National Park Service issued a report concluding that De Soto’s route is not eligible for National Historic Trail status, given the lack of consensus.
