Prolific cowboy artist Frederic Remington has been honored on a number of U.S. postage stamps: as a painter, illustrator, sculptor and as a famous American. In addition, several of his drawings/sketches have served as a basis for other U.S. stamp designs. This particular stamp was issued on October 4, 1961 which was the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth. It shows a detail from his 1905 painting entitled ‘The Smoke Signal’ which hangs in the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas.

The painting depicts two Indians sending a smoke signal while a third, on horseback, looks on. The detail on the stamp only shows the two performing the signaling. Smoke signals were used by certain Plains Indians to communicate over distances. The Amon Carter Museum possesses a substantial collection of Remington’s works including an 1889 painting entitled ‘A Dash for the Timber’ which also appeared on a U.S. postage stamp.
