Am 14. und 15. Juli 2021 verursachte ein Unwetter in Teilen Deutschlands die schwerste und tragischste Flutkatastrophe der jüngeren Vergangenheit. Flüsse und Bäche wurden zu reißenden Strömen, rissen zahllose Häuser mit sich und überschwemmten ganze Ortschaften meterhoch. Betroffen waren insbesondere in Rheinland-Pfalz die Ahr-Region und in Nordrhein-Westfalen die Erft. Über 180 Menschen verloren dabei ihr Leben, mehr als 700 wurden verletzt. Der Wiederaufbau der zerstörten Gebiete an der Ahr dauert bis heute (März 2023) an. Auch Belgien und die Niederlande waren von dem Hochwasser betroffen und mußten Todesopfer beklagen.

In Nordrhein-Westfalen war vor allem die Gemeinde Erftstadt betroffen. Die Gemeinde besteht aus 18 Orten und Dörfern, die historisch fast alle an Bächen und Flüssen errichetet worden sind, die bei der Flutkatastrophe über die Ufer getreten sind. In Ahrem wurden Gegenstände gesammelt, die von den Fluten angespült worden sind, darunter auch eine massive Eisentür. Der Anwohner Dirk Filz nahm sich dieser herrenlosen Türe an und verwandelte sie in ein Kunstwerk und Mahnmal. Auf der Türe hat er die Flüsse der Region als Risse sowie die betroffenen Orte als Kreise "eingezeichnet". Zusätzlich angebrachte Täfelchen dienen als Beschriftung der Flüsse und Orte.

Die Stadt Erftstadt ließ das Denkmal im Zentrum von Ahrem auf einer neu angelegten, kleinen Grünanlage aufstellen. Am 13. Mai 2022 wurde es feierlich enthüllt. Eine Informationstafel erklärt das Kunstwerk, und abends wird es mit Strahlern beleuchtet. Bänke nebenan laden zu einer Rast und zum Gedenken an dieses tragische Ereignis ein.

On July 14th and 15th, 2021, a storm in parts of Germany caused the most severe and tragic flood disaster in recent history. Rivers and streams turned into torrents, swept away countless houses and flooded entire towns several meters high. The Ahr region in Rhineland-Palatinate and the Erft in North Rhine-Westphalia were particularly affected. More than 180 people lost their lives and more than 700 were injured. The reconstruction of the destroyed areas on the Ahr continues to this day (March 2023). Belgium and the Netherlands were also affected by the flood and had to mourn deaths.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the municipality of Erftstadt was particularly affected. The municipality consists of 18 towns and villages, which historically almost all were built on streams and rivers that burst their banks during the flood disaster. Objects washed up by the floods were collected in Ahrem, including a massive iron door. The resident Dirk Filz took care of this abandoned door and transformed it into a work of art and a memorial. On the door he has "drawn" the rivers of the region as cracks and the affected villages as circles. Additionally attached plaques are used to label the rivers and villages.

The city of Erftstadt had the memorial erected in the center of Ahrem on a newly created, small green area. It was officially unveiled on May 13, 2022. An information board explains the work of art, and in the evening it is illuminated with spotlights. Benches next door invite you to take a rest and commemorate this tragic event.
