The board tells us that "The woodland is 73 hectares of ancient replanted woodland and is designated a local nature reserve.

A section of the woodland was once part of the first nature reserve in the world created by the famous Charles Waterton." Although the woodland is mainly ancient woodland there is also an area of managed pine tress planted in the 1950s to supply the local coal mines with pit props.

The board has information about the natural and managed woodland, mammals, birds and butterflies that can be found in the area.
