This building was constructed as a replacement in 1893, with town offices on the ground floor, and an auditorium space on the upper floors. It is an unusually large structure for an otherwise relatively rural community.

DEEP RIVER (alt. 60, town pop. 2381) (Town of Saybrook), 7.3 m., was formerly in the township called Old Saybrook and was first settled by white men from the parent Colony between 1663 and 1700. Locally the town is called by the name of its center, Deep River, to avoid confusion with Old Saybrook which is usually called ' Saybrook.' The town had been known at different times as Eight-Mile Meadow and Potopaug Quarter.

American-Guide-Series - Connecticut: a Guide to its Roads, Lore, and People, p.519 (1938)

The town hall is built on a triangular plot of land, which forced the building of a flatiron structure. This is a first for the Town Hall in my experience. Located at a very busy intersection.
