In Greek mythology Nike was the daughter of Pallas and Styx. She lived on Mount Olympus and was a close companion of Zeus. Nike, the goddess of strength, speed, and victory would fly around battlefields to reward the victorious warriors with glory and fame. Nike's counterpart in Roman mythology is Victoria who was often honored by triumphant Roman generals returning from war.
A 10' high, gilded bronze, freestanding sculpture of Nike, the Winged Goddess of Victory, stands on top of the New Britain Civil War Monument that was created by Ernest Flagg and dedicated in 1900. Nike is wearing classical robes trailing behind her with her wings outspread. She is standing on a sphere with her left foot forward and her right arm outstretched. Her left arm is bent forward at the elbow. In her right hand she is holding a laurel wreath.
