The Ilyushin Il-14 (NATO reporting name: Crate) was a Soviet twin-engine commercial and military personnel and cargo transport aircraft that first flew in 1950, and entered service in 1954. The Il-14 was also manufactured in East Germany by VEB Flugzeugwerke as the VEB 14 and in Czechoslovakia as the Avia 14.
Il-14T was a military transport version this plane.
Total production of the Il-14 was 1,345 aircraft: 1,065 in Moscow (Moscow Machinery Plant Nr.30) from 1956 to 1958 and Tashkent (Factory Nr.84) from 1954 to 1958. Licensed production of 80 in East Germany by VEB Flugzeugwerke Dresden (FWD) from 1956 to 1959 and 203 in Czechoslovakia by Avia, Prague, from 1956 to 1960. It was rugged and reliable, and thus was widely used in rural areas with poor quality airfields.

On August 22, 1964, one of the most tragic aviation accidents in the history of Czechoslovak military aviation occurred. The transport aircraft, an Ilyushin IL-14 T with registration number 3148, was located at the technical department at Prerov - Bochor airport. The aircraft belonged to the 1st Transport Paratrooper Aviation Regiment based in Mošnov, and between August 13th and 22nd, 1964, it underwent a periodic inspection after accumulating 150 flight hours (C revision). The crew was tasked with flying the aircraft back to the unit at Mošnov airport.

The investigative committee identified the commander of the aircraft as the main culprit and immediate cause of the aviation disaster, as he decided to continue the flight under weather conditions that did not allow for visual flight over the terrain at a height of 100 meters above ground level. The committee also identified the granting of permission to fly at an altitude of 100 meters by the air traffic control service as another factor and main cause of the accident, as the weather at Mošnov airport at that time was characterized by 8/8 cloud coverage at 150 meters, which did not comply with the minimum requirements for an IL-14 aircraft at Mošnov airport. Additionally, the crew composition was not in compliance with regulations due to a change in captain, and there was inadequate flight monitoring by the unit's command, which was focused on training for an upcoming airshow and did not pay sufficient attention to what seemed to be a simple flight after the inspection. This combination of several unfavorable factors resulted in a tragic outcome.
