In de hal van het politie bureau staat een oud brandweervoertuig ten toongesteld.
Het is niet waarschijnlijk dat de brandspuit die in het politie bureau staat ook dezelfde is hieronder wordt genoemd.
Feit is wel dat in 1683 in Oudewater al een brandspuit aanwezig was.
"In de nacht van 18 op 19 mei 1683 ontstond er brand in de brouwerij ‘Het Wapen van Oudewater’ aan de Havenstraat. De brand werd te laat ontdekt omdat de kleppermannen, die ’s nachts de ronde moesten doen als brandwachters, te vroeg naar bed waren gegaan. Het brouwhuis stond dus al in lichte laaie voordat het blussen begon en de vonken gingen in de richting van het weeshuis en het kruithuis.
De brandspuit
Oudewater had vrijwel zeker in 1683 al een brandspuit. In 1698 staat in de rekeningen van de stad opgeschreven dat de brandspuit gerepareerd moest worden, dus toen was de brandspuit al wat ouder. Die brandspuit moet een Hautsch-brandspuit met houten pijpen zijn geweest. Dat werkte wel iets beter dan blussen met brandemmers, maar met die houten pijpen had de waterstraal geen groot bereik.
Brandemmers
In 1683 waren er zeker 256 brandemmers in de stad. Brandgevaarlijke bedrijven, zoals bakkerijen, brouwerijen, smederijen en touwslagerijen moesten meerdere brandemmers in huis hebben. Brandemmers waren van leer, zodat je met de lege emmer kon gooien. Een houten emmer zou in zo’n geval kapot gaan en gooien met een metalen emmer zou gevaarlijk zijn. Plastic was er natuurlijk nog niet. Leren brandemmers kun je ook zien in het Brandweermuseum in Hellevoetsluis. De brand in mei 1683 was aanleiding voor een grote ‘brandschouw’, een controle op de brandblusmiddelen. Nou ja, dat waren dus vooral brandemmers. Alle brandemmers werden verplicht gekeurd en defecten moesten gerepareerd worden."
