I found the Northport Rail Trail while Geocaching. Unlike so many other rail trails, this one remains basically a natural foot path rather than pavement. Very little parking at either end of the trail. Parking can be found at N40 52.949 W073 20.912. where there is a trailhead to the trail, marked by a small sign Northport Rail Trail Park.
Local History: this rail spur was added in the 1860s to extend the train lines from Syosset to Northport, but was eventually abandoned due to geographic interference with further extension plans. It was granted to the town by MTA as part of the Rails to Trails movement. The first section of the Northport Rail Trail opened for use in 2007. This trail is also used by bicyclists and equestrians.
