Selina Hancock first started a licensed school on this site, with 41 children, in 1865. After the passing of the compulsory school act of 1875, a school building was erected by the Colonial Architect in 1877, and upon completion the school had an enrolment of 800 . The original school had six classrooms plus three other large rooms , one for boys and one for girls and another for infants. Until 1978 this was the Moonta Primary School.
The school was built of squared limestone blocks with a slate roof, now of corrugated iron.
