This postage stamp was issued on 30-Apr-2019, exactly 30 years after the death of Italian film director and producer Sergio Leone. Besides the view of Monument Valley and a portrait of Leone, the stamp shows the climactic scene from my favorite “spaghetti” western: ‘Once Upon a Time in the West.’ In this scene, consummate bad guy Frank, portrayed by actor Henry Fonda, is trying to put his gun back into the holster after being shot by an unnamed harmonica-playing man played by Charles Bronson. Only Fonda’s character can be seen on the stamp.

Sergio Leone practically invented the “spaghetti” western as a film genre and ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ is often considered his best movie. Though shot mostly in Spain, a few scenes were actually filmed in or near Monument Valley including the infamous hanging scene toward the end.

Monument Valley Tribal Park is located in northeast Arizona, very close to the border with Utah. The iconic formations seen on the stamp are known as West Mitten and East Mitten and are easily viewed from the park’s visitor center.
