The length of the Gothic temple was equal to the width of the current temple, but the dates of its construction are imprecise; It is believed that it was built between 1480 and the beginning of the 16th century. In the 17th century it was expanded with the Rosario and Blood chapels, both built next to and behind the bell tower, that is, facing north. The growth of the town led to the construction in the 18th century, after the Rosario chapel, of a chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, almost as large as the main nave, and two sacristies, one for the large church and one for the latter chapel.

This Gothic temple had as its most outstanding interior elements the altar of the Rosary, in a Baroque Renaissance style, dated 1635, the altar of Santa Lucía, Churrigueresque baroque, that of San Isidro, baroque, the processional cross from 1555, the monstrance from 1561, and the great altarpiece of San Esteban Protomártir (1497) on the main altar, the work of the brothers Pau and Rafael Vergós and continued, after the death of the former, by Rafael and his father Jaume. This altarpiece from the year 1917 is preserved in the National Museum of Art of Catalonia.
