EN: The oldest parts of the church in the Weimar suburb of Gelmeroda were built around 1200. The remains of a medieval secco painting that was installed in the eastern choir also date from this period. The tower with its striking shape probably dates from the 16th century and was built on the walls of the choir tower. In the period between 1905 and 1937, Lyonel Feininger, a classic modern artist, repeatedly visited the church in Gelmeroda and created a number of drawings and pictures that helped the church to become world famous.

The church fell into disrepair during the GDR era, but was preserved in the 1980s thanks to private community initiatives. The church has been consecrated again since 1991 and regularly holds services. In 1994 it was the first church in the new federal states to receive the status of a motorway church. In 1999 a light installation designed by the Weimar architect Peter Mittmann was installed, which illuminates the church at weekends in the style of a Feiniger painting.

The church is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the summer months from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Worship service is every Sunday at 11 a.m. A small permanent exhibition with copies of Feiningers art regarding the church can also be viewed there.
