La creación de este cementerio fue en 1831, la muerte de un protestante en España suponía un problema muy serio puesto que no existía un marco legal para tal eventualidad. Puesto que los cementerios estaban santificados a la fe católica, en España no se podían enterrar los cadáveres de todos los que no profesaran dicha religión. En Málaga, en particular, para realizar enterramientos no católicos las autoridades locales solo permitían llevar los cadáveres a la playa de noche a la luz de las antorchas para ser enterrados de pie en la arena dejándolos a la merced de las olas y los perros.
Cuando William Mark, que había sido testigo de estos entierros, fue nombrado cónsul británico en 1824 puso toda su dedicación en buscar un terreno que sirviese de cementerio para que los miembros de su comunidad pudieran recibir un enterramiento digno. Finalmente en 1829 las autoridades malagueñas le cedieron un terreno despoblado en las afueras de la ciudad cerca de la carretera de Almería y el cementerio inglés se hizo realidad, constituyéndose así como el Cementerio protestante más antiguo de la España peninsular. Según el registro de enterramientos la primera persona que fue inhumada en el nuevo cementerio fue un tal Mr George Stephens.
En 2006, la propiedad del cementerio se traspasó a la Fundación Cementerio Inglés de Málaga, una entidad sin ánimo de lucro, fundada para preservar, mantener y administrar el Cementerio como parte del legado histórico de la ciudad.

The creation of this cemetery was in 1831, the death of a Protestant in Spain was a very serious problem since there was no legal framework for such an eventuality. Since the cemeteries were sanctified to the Catholic faith, in Spain the corpses of all those who did not profess this religion could not be buried. In Malaga, in particular, to carry out non-Catholic burials, the local authorities only allowed bodies to be taken to the beach at night by torchlight to be buried standing up in the sand, leaving them at the mercy of the waves and dogs.
When William Mark, who had witnessed these burials, was appointed British consul in 1824, he put all his dedication into finding land to serve as a cemetery so that members of his community could receive a dignified burial. Finally, in 1829, the Malaga authorities ceded an uninhabited piece of land on the outskirts of the city near the Almería highway and the English cemetery became a reality, thus becoming the oldest Protestant cemetery in mainland Spain. According to the burial register, the first person to be buried in the new cemetery was a Mr George Stephens.
In 2006, ownership of the cemetery was transferred to the Fundación Cementerio Inglés de Málaga, a non-profit entity founded to preserve, maintain and manage the Cemetery as part of the city's historical legacy.
