"Erected in 1931, by public subscription, in commemoration of the torture of the Chevalier de La Barre, condemned and executed in Abbeville, in 1766, for not having greeted a religious procession. The La Barre monument is still today an annual rallying point for defenders of secularism and free thinkers.

The stele was erected in the name of the free thinkers of Gruissan in 1931 by Louis Rachou on the wall of his birthplace, opposite the church of Notre-Dame de l'Assomption.

The knight François-Jean Lefebvre de La Barre, born on September 12, 1745 in the castle of Férolles-en-Brie and died on July 1, 1766 in Abbeville, is a young French man of noble family condemned to death by beheading for blasphemy and sacrilege by the court of Abbeville, then by the Grand-Chamber of the Parliament of Paris. After being subjected to the ordinary and extraordinary question, he had to make amends, before being beheaded and then burned. His honor was defended post mortem by Voltaire."

"Érigé en 1931, par souscription publique, en commémoration du supplice du chevalier de La Barre, condamné et exécuté à Abbeville, en 1766, pour ne pas avoir salué une procession religieuse. Le monument La Barre est encore aujourd'hui un point de ralliement annuel des défenseurs de la laïcité et des libres-penseurs.

La stèle a été érigée au nom des libres penseurs gruissanais en1931 par Louis Rachou sur le mur de sa maison natale, face à l’église Notre-Dame de l’Assomption.

Le chevalier François-Jean Lefebvre de La Barre, né le 12 septembre 1745 au château de Férolles-en-Brie et mort le 1er juillet 1766 à Abbeville, est un jeune homme français de famille noble condamné à la mort par décapitation pour blasphème et sacrilège par le tribunal d'Abbeville, puis par la Grand-Chambre du Parlement de Paris. Après avoir été soumis à la question ordinaire et extraordinaire, il dut faire amende honorable, avant d'être décapité puis brûlé. Son honneur fut défendu post mortem par Voltaire. "
