EN: The exact start of construction of the church of St. Wenzel in Thörey, which now belongs to the Evangelical parish of Ichtershausen-Holzhausen in the church district of Arnstadt-Ilmenau, can unfortunately no longer be determined exactly, but the period is assumed to be around 1100. However, there is written evidence on the extensions of the church tower and a round apse in the years 1164 to 1174 from documents of the Ichtershausen monastery, to which the church was assigned until 1525. The preserved figurative paintings inside the tower date from the 14th century and are part of several cultural-historical investigations.

Around 1435 the nave was lengthened, the round apse replaced by a rectangular choir and supporting arches in the Gothic style were added. Around 1616 the nave was raised and the church tower was separated from the nave. A renovation took place in 1664/1665 after being devastated by Turkish and Hungarian marauders as a result of the 4th Austrian Turkish War.

The church was extensively renovated again after the reunification of Germany in 1990 and 1991. Since then, services have been held in the church again, these are published on the notice board.
