Wooden pulpit in Holy Trinity church, Kendal. The octagonal pulpit is wooden and panelled, and decorated with blind tracery.

In the seventeenth century it was practice to have public penance on Sundays, where the guilty party was obliged to stand under the pulpit, attired in a white sheet, for up to three Sundays, according to the crimes committed. The parson then read out all the sins to the congregation.

The pulpit back then was probably a triple-decker which had occupied a pillar further down the Nave, but by the early 19th century the church was in a poor state of repair, so a great restoration began. When the old pulpit was removed, a piece of parchment, bearing the date 1236, was found.
