El Museo del Templo Mayor abrió sus puertas el 12 de octubre de 1987 y ha recibido, hasta ahora, a más de trece millones de visitantes. Su creación fue consecuencia de las excavaciones arqueológicas realizadas por el Proyecto Templo Mayor.

Entre 1978 y 1982, las cuales se hicieron bajo la dirección de Eduardo Matos Moctezuma y permitieron recuperar una colección de más de 7 mil objetos, así como los vestigios del Templo Mayor de Tenochtitlan y de algunos edificios aledaños. Todo ello dio origen a la iniciativa de edificar un museo de sitio para exhibir dicha colección y, al mismo tiempo, complementar la visita de la zona arqueológica.
The Templo Mayor Museum opened its doors on October 12, 1987 and has so far received more than thirteen million visitors. Its creation was a consequence of the archaeological excavations carried out by the Templo Mayor Project in its first season, between 1978 and 1982, which were conducted under the direction of Eduardo Matos Moctezuma and allowed the recovery of a collection of more than 7,000 objects, as well as the remains of the Templo Mayor of Tenochtitlan and some surrounding buildings. All this gave rise to the initiative to build a site museum to exhibit the collection and, at the same time, complement the visit to the archaeological site.

El Museo del Templo Mayor se encuentra localizado en el Centro Histórico de la Ciudad de México, México. El objetivo del museo es dar a conocer los hallazgos encontrados en el marco de la investigación en sitio que se hace en la zona arqueológica del Templo Mayor de los mexicas.
Fue inaugurado en 1987 y es obra de Pedro Ramírez Vázquez y Jorge Ramírez Campuzano, la investigación museográfica estuvo a cargo de Eduardo Matos Moctezuma. En el museo se muestra un cuadro histórico de los mexicas, así como buena parte de los hallazgos del centro ceremonial, provenientes de aproximadamente 120 ofrendas. Además alberga el enorme monolito de la diosa de la luna (Coyolxauhqui).

El museo se encuentra dividido en 8 salas temáticas:
De Coatlicue al Templo Mayor
Hallazgos y las investigaciones en el Templo Mayor desde 1790 cuando fue encontrada la Piedra del Sol y la Coatlicue.
Ritual y sacrificio
Objetos relacionados con los ritos funerarios, las ceremonias religiosas y el sacrificio humano.
Tributo y comercio
Comercio con otros pueblos y los tributos que les debían los pueblos sometidos.
Huitzilopochtli
Objetos asociados al culto del dios de la guerra o “colibrí del sur”
Tláloc
Objetos relacionados y representaciones del dios de la lluvia y fecundador de la tierra.
Flora y fauna
Restos de animales y plantas relacionados con su medio ambiente y a su medio religioso.
Agricultura
Objetos relacionados con la importancia de la agricultura y los aztecas.
En esta sala, se encuentran representaciones de deidades relacionadas con la agricultura y con el maíz, planta sagrada por excelencia, así como una maqueta del sistema agrícola intensivo de chinampas , y otra del tianguis de Tlatelolco.
Arqueología histórica
Objetos encontrados durante la investigación pero que abarcan desde la llegada de los españoles hasta el siglo XX.

The Templo Mayor Museum is located in the Historic Center of Mexico City, Mexico. The objective of the museum is to present the findings found in the archaeological zone of the Templo Mayor of the Mexicas.
It was inaugurated in 1987 and is the work of Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and Jorge Ramírez Campuzano, the museographic research was in charge of Eduardo Matos Moctezuma. From Coatlicue to the Great Temple
Findings and research in the Great Temple since 1790 when the Stone of the Sun and Coatlicue were found.
Ritual and sacrifice
Objects related to funerary rites, religious ceremonies and human sacrifice.
Tribute and trade
Trade with other peoples and tribute owed to them by the subjugated peoples.
Huitzilopochtli
Objects associated with the cult of the god of war or "hummingbird of the south".
Tlaloc
Objects related to and representations of the god of rain and fertilizer of the earth.
Flora and fauna
Remains of animals and plants related to their environment and religious environment.
Agriculture
Objects related to the importance of agriculture and the Aztecs.
In this room, there are representations of deities related to agriculture and corn, a sacred plant par excellence, as well as a model of the intensive agricultural system of chinampas, and another of the Tlatelolco market.
Historical archaeology
