in 1881, the Des Moines and Northwestern Railroad was the longest rail line in Iowa, running for 113.8 miles from Desmoins to Fonda. A decade later, the narrow-gauge line was widened to "standard" gauge and became partof the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad. Passenger service fell with the introduction of automobiles and was discontinued in 1952; the rail carried freight for another thirty-five years. When the railroad abandoned the route, the Central Iowa Energy Cooperative purchased the right-of way and began development of a multi-use trail on the old line. The "North Loop" is a thirty-three mile section that runs from here in Waukee northwest through Dallas Center and Milburn to Perry, then west to Dawson and Jamaica. The portion of the trail from here to Minburn has caches very nearly every tenth of a mile.
