Het is ongetwijfeld het meest gefotografeerde beeld in de Betuwe. Ook al omdat het bij de Grote Kerk op zo’n prominente plek in Elst staat. In het beeld ‘Paardenhandel’ zie je de hand terug van kunstenaar Marcus Ravenswaaij (1925-2003).
Het lijnenspel in de compositie en de sterke vorm vormden zijn handelsmerk. Daaraan ontleent hij de kwalificatie: beeldhouwer van nature. ,,Mijn man hield van mooie vormen”, zegt zijn vrouw en kunstenaar Marijke Ravenswaaij-Deege. ,,Hij had een grote naam in het land. Hij heeft er altijd van gehouden om beelden van dieren te maken.”

It is undoubtedly the most photographed image in the Betuwe. Also because it is in such a prominent place in Elst near the Grote Kerk. In the sculpture 'Horse trade' you can see the hand of artist Marcus Ravenswaaij (1925-2003).
The interplay of lines in the composition and the strong form were his trademark. From this he derives the qualification: sculptor by nature. “My husband loved beautiful shapes,” says his wife and artist Marijke Ravenswaaij-Deege. “He was a big name in the country. He has always loved making sculptures of animals.”
Village street full of horses
You can find examples of this all over the country. From the three foxes in Woerden to the breeding goat in Bruchem and the bull in Hoornaar, South Holland.
The Elster artwork was donated to the citizenry on August 30, 1984 at the initiative of the 'Committee to promote the autumn horse market and other interests in Elst'.
The text is applied to the plinth. The image is reminiscent of a Dorpsstraat full of horses on the first Monday in September. Those horses are staying away this year because of the corona crisis.
Artist Ravenswaaij was commissioned to make a life-size work of art. “A harness horse from the area posed for it. It was a big assignment. You can imagine that he worked on it for a long time,” says his wife.
Marcus Ravenswaaij wanted to become an artist as a child. There was only one way for him and that is to create, to bring something to life. Nature, humans and animals were his sources of inspiration. He called himself both a romantic and a realist.
Born Gorinchemmer, he trained as a sculptor at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. His art can be found in many European countries, but also in the US, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand.

Dorpsstraat vol paarden
Daar vind je door het hele land voorbeelden van. Van de drie vossen in Woerden tot de fokgeit in Bruchem en de stier in Hoornaar, Zuid-Holland.
Het Elster kunstwerk is op 30 augustus 1984 geschonken aan de burgerij op initiatief van het ‘Comité ter bevordering van de najaarspaardenmarkt en andere belangen te Elst’.
De tekst is op de sokkel aangebracht. Het beeld herinnert aan een Dorpsstraat vol paarden op de eerste maandag in september. Die paarden blijven dit jaar weg vanwege de coronacrisis.
Kunstenaar Ravenswaaij had de opdracht gekregen een levensgroot kunstwerk te maken. ,,Een tuigpaard uit de omgeving heeft ervoor geposeerd. Het was een grote opdracht. Je kunt je daarbij voorstellen dat hij er lang aan gewerkt heeft”, zegt zijn vrouw.
Marcus Ravenswaaij wilde als kind al kunstenaar worden. Er was voor hem maar één weg en dat is scheppen, iets tot leven brengen. De natuur, de mens en het dier waren zijn inspiratiebronnen. Hij noemde zich zowel romanticus als realist.
De geboren Gorinchemmer volgde de opleiding tot beeldhouwer aan de Academie voor Beelden Kunsten in Rotterdam. Zijn kunst is te vinden in tal van Europese landen, maar ook in de VS, Canada, Zuid-Afrika en Nieuw- Zeeland.
Zowel koningin Beatrix als prins Bernhard en prinses Margriet hebben beelden van hem onthuld."
