MEDICINE HAT, AB – The city’s regional event centre will carry a new name. The City of Medicine Hat revealed the facility, known currently as the Canalta Centre will be renamed Co-op Place.

“We could not have found a more fitting partner for the regional event centre,” said Mayor Ted Clugston. Their commitment to Medicine Hat and Southern Alberta is evident not only by their many acts of generosity but also their persistence in investing the community event when times are uncertain, “ he said.

At Monday’s city council meeting Clugston called it a really good news story in a really difficult time.
“As we all know and I think it was even said tonight, you can’t go anywhere in town without seeing the name Co-op somewhere these days, and I was kind of joking a bit but I have been following around Paul {Haynes, CEO of South Country Co-op} for a while and we have been doing ribbon cuttings and been giving back money to the community from Police Point to the library to FLC, they’ve been donating money, so what a great homegrown partner to have now,” Clugston said.

The installation of new signage will take place in the coming months, solidifying the transition from the Canalta Centre to Co-op Place.

CEO of South Country Co-op Paul Haynes said visitors can expect a few changes to the decor once the transition takes place.

“There will be various pictures from Co-op in the centre, so yeah there are going to be some changes with what you see in there today and just an opportunity to really promote local and we are going to as much as we can to promote local businesses and keep the revenues from those local businesses here,” said Haynes.

Haynes said some sort of celebratory event will take place to mark the transition.

Canalta Real Estate Services held the name for five years as part of a contract."
