La descripción oficial del escudo de Arévalo es:
“El escudo representa a un guerrero armado con casco, lanza y cota de mallas que sale de una fortaleza, es el que viene ostentando este Ayuntamiento desde tiempo inmemorial, adornado con los títulos de Muy Noble, Muy Ilustre y Muy Leal, concedidos por Alfonso VIII por el valor que sus tercios mostraron en la célebre batalla de Las Navas de Tolosa en 1212. Después se le añadiría el título de Muy Humanitaria y la Gran Cruz de Beneficencia.”
Tres son los elementos que se repiten en todos los escudos de la ciudad:
- Una torre de castillo o fortaleza.
- Un caballero armado.
- Un caballo (aunque nada se diga de él en la descripción oficial).
Pero luego cada uno de los escudos distribuidos por edificios oficiales de Arévalo tiene sus peculiaridades.
Muchas veces he oído que el caballero monta a pelo en el caballo, sin montura. Pero lo cierto es que en casi todos ellos, especialmente en los más antiguos, aparece siempre con silla de montar. También lo de la cota de mallas, no está tan claro en la mayoría de los escudos pues lo que se aprecia es un caballero con armadura completa. Lo que sí es común en el caballero es el yelmo con airón a modo de penachos o plumas y la lanza, aunque la longitud varía bastante de unos a otros. Y el caballo, en los escudos más antiguos tiene una vestimenta defensiva llamada gualdrapa.”
