Danny Thomas was born in Deerfield, MI (not far from Toledo, OH) to parents who had immigrated to the United States from Lebanon, then part of the Ottoman Empire. He got his start in show business performing in night clubs as a comedian and on radio in Detroit. During the 1940s and early 1950s, he appeared in several movies, most notably “I'll See You in My Dreams” with Doris Day and “Call Me Mister” with Betty Grable. But it was early television’s “Make Room for Daddy,” which became “The Danny Thomas Show,” that made Danny Thomas a household word. The show ran for 11 years as one of the most popular shows of that era.

When he was a struggling young actor, Danny Thomas, a devout catholic, made a vow that if he were to ever become successful, he would establish a shrine to St. Jude, the patron saint of hopeless causes. After his mega success in television, Thomas made good on that vow when he opened the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN. St. Jude’s focus is on catastrophic childhood diseases like leukemia and other cancers, and it is what Danny Thomas is most known for today.

Danny Thomas died of a heart attack in 1991 at the age of 79. He is interred in a large mausoleum, along with his wife, on the grounds of the St. Jude Hospital in Memphis.
