I located this bell while caching in the snow! Had to remove the snow so i could read the plaque and while doing so met one of the men who helped to build the bell's current frame/stand. The Lil renruts were able to stand up inside the bell and thought that was really cool!
The sign states the following:
CITY HALL BELL
THIS BELL, USED TO SOUND FIRE ALARMS IN WATERTOWN, WAS HUNG IN THE COUNTY COURT HOUSE TOWER IN 1875. IT WAS REMOVED TO THE CITY HALL TOWER IN 1895. WITH THE RAZING OF THAT BUILDING IN 1966, IT WAS PLACED AT ITS PRESENT SITE BY THE WATERTOWN ROTARY CLUB.
The inscription on the front of the bell:
City of Watertown, N.Y.
1875
General Bradley Winslow
Mayor
G. Bradford, S.H. Tripp, Committee of Council
There is an inscription on the back as well...I didn't write it down, but believe it said Troy, NY on it.
A new picture of the plaque minus the snow would be appreciated if another could do so. Thanks! Don't forget to grab the cache while you are here!
