This statue was originally part of
"The Golden Lion" Coaching House
in King Street
was re-erected here to mark
the completion of the pedestrianisation scheme
in October 1988
The building was originally erected as as a home for the South Shields Literary, Mechanical and Scientific Institution in 1860. In 1873 the building became the town’s first free Public Library and Reading rooms and it opened as a museum in 1876.
