Built in 1939 as the new Hawthorne City Hall after the previous city hall had burned down with all the city records. This white stucco building was built in the Mediterranean style architecture of the time. It was a WPA project, the men who built it worked 10 hour days and were paid $1.00 per hour.
Besides the city hall residing there, the fire department and the local Masonic Lodge took up residence. Today the Masonic Lodge still meets there. The City Hall moved down the street in 2018 into a vacant former bank building and the fire department has a newer more modern fire station.
Not much has changed on the exterior of the building except for a large bell with a cupola on the roof of the entrance. The bell being salvaged from the old school house. A Sabel Palm, the Florida State tree, in front of the entrance and the building is now painted in a gray color serves a new purpose as the City of Hawthorne Community Center.
