"The Huntoon House was built in 1862, by E.D. Huntoon, replacing the Fox River House, a hotel which burned down the previous year. In 1872, the Huntoon House was extensively remodel. Over the years, this building has remained a hotel, although its name has changed several times. In 1895, it was known as the Northwestern. When it was the Hotel Grand in the early part of the 20th century, an overflow facility, known as the Hotel Grand Annex, was operated a few blocks west on Downer. The combined facilities offered 60 rooms and could accommodate about 100 guests. In the early 1960's, it was renamed the Galena Hotel. It is the only remaining structure on what was once a block crowded with buildings" ~ text of historical marker
