An information sign at the entrance informs the visitors in two languages (Lithuanian and English):
EXPOSITION OF THE WOODEN SCULPTURES
"THE HILL OF WITCHES"
One of the oldest parabolic dunes in Juodkrante is the Hill of Witches. It is said that witches and demons used to host parties there since time immemorial. Jonas Stanius, a local forester, suggested placing these characters from legends on the hill. Between 1979 and 1981, during the course of folk-art workshops, 50 wood carvers created 71 sculptures. The exposition consists of more than 80 oak sculptures, and it is replenished and renewed on a regular basis.
On a trail, that is approximately 1.5 km long, all the sculptures can be admired. Some of them are
benches or
seats, one sculpture is a
slide for children, one is a
swing etc. Many of them were made from a single large tree trunk, some consist of several smaller or bigger parts of wood. And they differ a lot in style and technique and therefore the trail never gets boring and make sure that you pay attention to the details.
The entry is free and the trail is open 24/7. A local guide is highly recommended, because they should be able to tell you what every single sculpture is about.
