This was an unexpected find as I drove into Grafton, Nebraska (population 167). The entire wall of a long shed on the south side of highway 6 is decorated with a beautiful elaborate mural showing country roads, cattle, farm fields, a car and horses. And there's a bonus take off of American Gothic on the west end of the building. I don't know who the guy with the cigar is but I'm sure he's a local resident. The artist is identified at the west end of the mural as G. Holdren, assisted by Alan Holdren. He's from Friend, Nebraska, another small town 23 miles east of Grafton. The mural is dated 2002.
This is a wonderful representation of rural life in this part of the world.
Update: May,2007. I've talked to people from Friend and have learned that G Holdren is the art teacher in Friend. He has done other murals in small town Nebraska. I will be looking for them.
