The famous coffeehouse company, Starbucks, started as a single coffeehouse in the Pike Place Market of Seattle by founders Gordon Bowker and Terry Heckler. The shop was named after a character in the book Moby Dick. The story goes that Bowker liked the name "Pequod" (the ship in the novel), but his creative partner Heckler heckled: "No one's going to drink a cup of Pee-quod!" Heckler suggested "Starbo." Brainstorming with these two ideas resulted in the company being named for the Pequod's first mate, Starbuck.

In 1987 Howard Schultz purchased the business. In 1992 with 165 outlets, the company went public. Now, 15 years after going public, the company has over 12,000 locations worldwide. Stores can be found in Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bahrain, Brazil,[9] Canada, Chile, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Indonesia, Ireland, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Oman, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. According to Starbucks President Martin Coles, the corporation plans to eventually have 20,000 locations overseas, with a substantial portion of those in China.

The corporation employs 140,000 people and in 2005 had a yearly revenue of $6.369 billion (USD).

The building the corporation is headquartered in was originally built in 1912 to house Seattle's new Sears location and has been a a Seattle landmark long before Starbucks was even formed. Starbucks saved the building from demolition and renovated it, adding its mermaid icon to the clock tower.
