One of the most popular rock songs of the late 1970s, Gerry Rafferty's 1978 hit "Baker Street" reached #2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 songs and was part of the platinum selling "City to City" album that topped the U.S. charts that year.

"Windin' your way down on Baker Street, light in your head and dead on your feet, well another crazy day, you'll drink the night away and forget about everything."

"Baker Street," recorded by Scottish rock and roller Jerry Rafferty in 1978 is my favorite song from the 1970s. Melancholy lyrics, a cautionary tale about life slipping by, and the most hard-driving and wailing saxophone intro and refrain in rock helped drive the song to widespread popularity in both the U.S. and the U.K.

The song tells the story of a man trying to find his way in life, a city dweller surrounded by many people, but who is still alone. Booze and cheap sex leave him feeling empty and he thinks just one more year and he'll be happy - but of course that one more year never comes.

The song received additional airplay and exposure following its inclusion on the sound track for the 1997 movie "Good Will Hunting."

Seeing this sign for Baker Street, I couldn't help but wind my way down it - but unlike the song's protagonist, I was completely sober!
