This marker is one of several along the Middlesex Canal. It is northwest of the Wilmington MBTA Commuter Rail station.
The marker reads:
"On this canal boats towed by horses carried passengers and freight 27 miles between Boston and the Merrimack River at Lowell until 1851. This restored section stands in the original location built by Col. Loammi Baldwin 1794-1803. Canal traffic vital to early industry was replaced by the railroad after 1835. This park is its monument."
