The Sacred Heart Convent was established when Bishop Grandin decided that it was necessary to have the sisters called away from their initial Canadian mission after they had been caught in the midst of the Riel Rebellion. They were welcomed in Calgary on July 26, 1885 were they were given the Oblates Father's home as their residence and immediately opened their doors to children for classes in September of that year.
The sisters and their school set teaching standards in December forming the basis of the Calgary Roman Catholic School District.
In 1893 the convent building was replaced with the main structure seen today and in the main entrance photographs of this waymark.
