Broken Obelisk is a sculpture by the painter, Barnett Newman, created in 1963. It is the largest and best known among his six sculptures.

This piece is one of three versions of Newman's obelisk that were made. It is installed at a corner of Red Square near the Suzallo Library at the University of Washington. Another of the sculptures is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and the third is located in front of the Rothko Chapel in Houston.
Newman is best know for his color field paintings of the 1950's and 1960's. He is classified as an abstract expressionist, but due to his rejection of expressive brushstrokes, can also be grouped with the "post painterly-expressionists", such as Frank Stella.
The obelisk was created in 1963 of cor-ten steel.
