Elmwood was built in 1830 by Congressman Hugh Caperton and is located on Route 219, just north of the small town of Union, West Virginia.

Hugh Caperton was born on April 17, 1781 in Greenbrier County, Virginia (Present day West Virginia) and moved to the Union Area of Monroe County where her became Sheriff in 1805. In 1810 he was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates, serving until 1813. In 1812, Mr. Caperton was elected to the United State House of Representatives, serving one term from 1813 – 1815. He returned to Monroe County where he was a farmer and merchant until he returned to the Virginia House of Delegates, serving from 1826-1830. Mr. Caperton built Elmwood in the early 1930’s and lived there until his death on February 9, 1847. Hugh Caperton and other members of the Caperton Family are buried in the Green Hill Cemetery in Union, West Virginia. Elmwood has always been a private residence and today sits abandoned and unattended and visitors are prohibited from entering the property. Elmwood can be seen from Monroe County Confederate Memorial on Route 219 just north of Union.
