John Echols was born on March 20, 1823 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He attended Washington College (now known as Washington and Lee University) and studied law at Harvard. After being admitted to the bar he served as commonwealth attorney for Monroe County, Virginia (now West Virginia) until the start of the Civil War. When Virginia seceded from the Union, Echols worked to recruit volunteers in western Virginia and was appointed Lieutenant Colonel in the 27th Virginia Regiment. He led his regiment at First Bull Run and joined four other regiments in winning fame as the “Stonewall Brigade.” After being wounded at Kernstown in March of 1862, Echols was promoted to brigadier general and commanded the Confederate Armies in Southwest Virginia. Echols was also present at the Battle of New Market, Droop Mountain and Cold Harbor. Learning of General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, General Echols march to North Carolina where he joined the command of General Joseph Johnston before surrendering his troops new Augusta, Georgia. After the Civil War, General Echols went back to his legal practice and became a wealthy lawyer and business man in Staunton, Virginia. General Echols died on May 24, 1896 and is buried in the Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton, Virginia.
