This sign is located at the trailhead for the Lava Cast Forest Trail
Marker Name: Trees of Stone
Marker Text: Welcome to the Lava Cast Forest Geological Area. This 1 mile (1.62 km) paved trail will take you through some fine examples of unique geological formations known as lava casts
These lava casts or tree molds, formed about 6000 years ago as hot lava flowed through the forest. As the lava came in contact with the trees, it solidified around the trunks of the larger ones and cooled, encasing the trees in stone.
This lava cast forest covers a 5 square mile area and originated from one of several side vents on Newberry Volcano.
Please help us preserve these formations for the enjoyment of others.
