The Icarian movement in Iowa was similar to the better known religious based Amana colonies but it was a secular social experiment that advocated Christian principles. Beginning in France in the mid-1800's, these non-religious utopian communities came to America and were established in Texas, Louisiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, and California. The Colony in Adams County, Iowa was established in 1860 by 235 people who had previously lived in Louisiana and Illinois. The colony persisted until 1895.

The Marker Text:

Plans are underway to restore and recreate the Adams county colony as a historical educational and tourist site.
